Making Secondhand more Second Nature

Secondhand stores are vastly becoming well-known, and well-loved, as many young adults have opted for sustainable fashion. Growing up with money a little tight at times, I loved scoring a good find right when I needed it most. However, such stores offer so much more than simply a more affordable way to shop for clothing; they positively impact the community around us.

At times it's hard to keep in mind all that stores like The Salvation Army, Savers, Goodwill, or Deseret Industries do to help ones to impart good recycling and reusing habits. Many help to inculcate a circulation of reusable items through donation centers located within the building. This does more than aide in the vast amount of inventory readily available daily to thrift shoppers, it assist in keeping pieces such as clothing, jewelry, and household items out of landfills. Along with this, Goodwill stores are able to provide a number of job opportunities, and career assistance programs, freely to those in search of employment by means of each purchase.

Yes, it's important to thrift from these stores, but it's also vital that we give back to them. Utilize Savers fun-drive option as an outlet to raise money for a club, and encourage your peers to reduce, reuse, and recycle. Bring a smile to someone else, by donating your gently used items that you no longer use, or don't fit your style, and give it a second, third, or fourth life. Doing so makes a difference, and grants a world of opportunities for someone in your community.

All in all, do your best to give a thrift.

  1. Great reminder. Though I am used to donating to goodwill my unwanted item, I should do that more often and also start getting involved on giving back.

    1. Nice! It's good that you're already in the habit, and it really helps to cultivate a "get some, give some mentality". Helps to eliminate a lot of household clutter too!

  2. I always saw secondhand stores as a place to donation for tax write-offs. Thank you for spotlighting the other benefits such as "reduce, reuse, and recycle" and provide job opportunities and career assistance programs. I think I'll make another donation run next weekend :-)

    1. You're so welcome! And that's true too, I've personally never done so, but that is another cool benefit! And I'm sure the new owners of your gently used items will appreciate your donating!

  3. I always loved donating my unused things to places like Goodwill. I do have the hopeful mindset it is benefitting someone. It actually falls in line also with a lesson in this class explaining the use of recycling technological devices. I think people can be a bit too wasteful of items and I'm fascinated how re-purposing or donating can be a much more useful action. This includes even when people turn worn-out objects into aesthetic pieces or particular functional units.

    1. Aww that's so nice! And you're right with recycling technology too. A lot of places can refurbish those pieces, or creative individuals can make art, or new items out of old technology. I've been able to acquire some functioning film cameras, and cassette players and have put to good use. And they often have some cool keyboards too at places like Goodwill :) So you never know!

  4. I love thrift shopping, its were I get half of my clothes lol. Anytime I go to a place to make donations I look around to see what kind of things they have and usually come out with at least 5 items. I am kind of an "old head" and really like and have an appreciation for retro type things such as clothing, furniture, and music.

    1. Me too! At least 95% of my clothing, and bedroom items are thrifted finds. There are only a few things I never thrift simply because it's a bit too close to home for me XD. And same here, I love vintage/retro pieces a lot. The quality, and durability often never compares to more modern pieces. I've thrifted some really nice wicker items recently for my room.

  5. I love thrifting. I grew up going with my grandma. As an adult I don't find myself getting new clothes often, but I've always made an effort that things I'm no longer using I donate.

    1. Aww that's so nice! And I'm often the same way. Unless I have a style change I get a ton of wear out of my items, and donate whatever I realize I won't be getting much wear out of. I'm glad you're already in a routine of donating too!

  6. Thank you for further helping us explore the world of thrifting. The fact that you took the time to remind us that it not only helps us save money, but also create jobs and other opportunities for our community shows me that you're an incredibly involved and empathetic individual.

  8. I've only been thrift shopping once and I found some nice items during my time over there for a very low price. There are many old or worn out pieces of clothing that I don't use anymore, and I donate them instead of just throwing them away : )

  9. I use to donate lots of old clothes to Goodwill, and I even find a few really good items there. My first piano was purchase from Goodwill. It's a shame it's not as popular anymore.

  10. It's awesome that you are bringing light to the amazing things that Goodwill and other thrift stores bring to their communities. I utilize the Goodwill by my house to donate clothes or any other items taking up space at my place to put them to use for someone that will use them!

  11. We shop at Saver's for clothing, its like Goodwill. In a family of 6, it helps myself and my parents when shopping for cheap clothes. We also have lots of toys and hand-me-downs we donate to Saver's as well.
